Web Accessibility at UW-Madison: Student Access & Stories

  • 11:35 AM- 11:55 AM Students' Use of Campus Accessibility Services - Nicole Soukup and Todd Schwanke, McBurney Disability Resource Center

Brief discussion and overview of the students that McBurney serves, distributions of students on campus, the services/accommodations they receive, and some of the barriers we are working on.

  • 11:55 AM-12:10 PM The 2008 DoIT Information Technology Survey of Students with Disabilities - Alice Anderson

Making learning resources accessible to students with disabilities while addressing the preferences of students overall is a fascinating process. Through annual surveys, students at UW-Madison have told us what technologies they own, and their opinions and preferences for "technologies and learning," as well as how they would like to access their course materials/resources or the barriers they experience.

  • 12:10 PM-12:45 PM Making Learning Resources Accessible to Students with Disabilities: Audio and Video Materials - Alice Anderson

A case study with World Caption software that shows how 26 videos were quickly captioned for a real class, including data on costs to obtain transcripts, and time to caption.

12:45 PM-1:00 PM Making Learning Resources Accessible to Students with Disabilities: How Can ComETS Help Lower Barriers to PDFs? - Joyce Tikalsky

Students continue to encounter inaccessible PDFs in their work. What ideas and suggestions do ComETS members have for processes that could overcome this barrier? We've come a long way since the university announced an accessibility policy in 2000. Is there more we can do? Ideas and suggestions for making PDFs accessible on university websites, with a priority on class materials

12:45 PM-1:00 PM

Web Accessibility News and Resources:

  • New and recommended online resources for making course materials accessible: tutorials, course management systems,
